From: Nicholas Chancey To: CommitteeForJustice@hotmail.com Subject: Calvin Solet case Date: January 10, 2000 This letter complements those of Vonda Billiot and Ray Pourciau concerning the Calvin Solet Jr. case. I have kept up with the affair since its early days. I am a daily reader of The Courier online, www.houmatoday.com. I believe this trial was a witch hunt from the beginning. The cleanliness of the deputy's uniform when he was found in a drainage canal; the alcohol in the deputy's system, when no tests were conducted to the mud and water; the deputy's inability to swim, when it was well known that he was capable of fording the canal; the ever-so-present "missing gun" that looms over Solet's head; the missing pieces of audio tape … and Solet was found guilty? If I were to hire Chicken Little to stand on the courthouse square and cry that the sky is falling, would anyone care to join me in pulling up a lawn chair and watching the Sheriff's Office come out with 10-foot poles? The elements by which Solet was convicted spell out the simple word of conspiracy, a conspiracy by the Sheriff's Office and the district attorney to avenge the loss of a deputy who had potential in the Sheriff's Office. How many more young lives are going to be lost at the hands of the corrupt? This should be a lesson to Generation X that the power of voting is well worth the two minutes it takes. Nicholas S.
